Budvar’s Half and Half To Make Debut At Northern Bar Show

Budvar’s Half and Half To Make Debut At Northern Bar Show
April 2009

The UK’s favourite Czech brewer and the brewers of the only lager conditioned beers to win the approval of CAMRA and to enjoy membership of  the Cask Marque programme will be featuring their Half and Half for the first time at the Northern Bar Show.
Not a new beer but rather a new concept Half and Half consists of draught Budvar Original and draught Budvar Dark. Budvar Original is the golden ABV 5% brew which Nielsen reckons is in the top 50 drinks in the UK on-trade and Budvar Dark is a 4.7% retro beer designed by the brewery to taste like all lager conditioned beers did before they were turned golden in the 1840’s (and not by a man in Pilsen but by a man in Prague)
Half and Half is simply a mixture of the two producing a third and very distinctive drink. It has been described by no less a luminary as Roger Protz, editor of the Good Beer Guide amongst other things, as “tasting like a very superior Mild and Bitter”. This according to Protz is an interesting development because the Half and Half concept began  at home in the Czech Republic  and has become very popular there despite the fact that the Czech palate is know not to react favourably to anything reminiscent of  British beer styles.
Anybody listing Original and Dark in draught form can get both drinks stylishly on the counter in the form of the specially designed Budvar duo font. The font is really special in that it has a third middle-position tap that can be easily activated by any stockist wishing to offer Half and Half in a consistent and trouble free way.
Recently the Half and Half  concept has found it self somewhat expanded as a number of  British micro-breweries have taken to mixing  Budvar Original with their own brews
